Hi. My view is once you have experience in general practice as a PA you may choose to specialize in a medical field like dermatology, cardiology, surgery or others. A physicians assistant is an excellent job and one that is highly rewarding for the right person.

RE: How to bulletproof your job.

I liked your article on bulletproofing your job, but the fact of the matter is, there is no bulletproof job. In fact, I agree with your work ethics, but have on several occasions seen the exact opposite occur. People that do everything right, are sometimes sent to the unemployment line first and the bosses drinking buddy, or biggest sluffer in the office remains. The problem with your article is that you have totally neglegted the social aspect of the game. An aspect which in the real world plays a greater part than the “good worker guy” mentalitiy. In fact some employers view this “over the top worker” as weak, often paying the person less, and treat the person more like a pet than a respected employee. We live in a mercenary society, and I would recommend do your job well, but be buddies with the higher ups if your want to keep your job in this economy. Because when it comes to their buddies or someone they don’t know that well or appreciate, it’ll be the quiet guy that does an amazing job first. And if it’s you or them, you can bet it will be you.

I would have done this fresh out of college!

It seems like an easy win. Most of the time I was hanging out and going out to drink with my co-workers anyway.

It does smack a little of the old coal mining towns in the US where everything was paid for in scrip (the corporation owned the town, the stores and everything. There was no money only company scrip) – as long as the corporation doesn’t go this way and instead makes this an optional benefit to employment – I would support it!

Wow that’s certainly an interesting approach. I wonder if it would become overkill if you’re living with the people you work closest to. If you’re just living with people who are in the company (and not necessarily those you work with constantly) I think I would consider it.

I really enjoyed the first season of “Mad Men,” and am looking forward to the second.

The thing that really floors me is how the attitudes on smoking have changed from the late ’60s & ’70s to now. I know hardly anyone now that smokes, and they all sneak off outside to do it, where as a (very) young kid, I remember everyone did.

I, too, am a huge fan of “Mad Men.” I haven’t missed an episode. The demographic of the 1960s workforce was certainly different than it is today. First, the only black man working within the Sterling Cooper building (that I’ve noticed) runs the elevator. Second, the secretarial pool is exclusively staffed by women. The men in those days were clearly allergic to typewriter keys. Third, men in the office were clearly the dominant force while women acted somewhat “mouse like” — if you believe “Mad Men” is a full and accurate depiction.

Just as things change, they also stay the same. A common analogy, but truth be told, there are women who lack the confidence today to transition out of traditional support roles. To date, only 2% of chief executive roles with companies in the US are held by women. A very small number, I feel. As women continue to climb the career ladder, there are those on the other side of the spectrum that have become complacent staying within the all-too-familiar support (non-management) role.

Are women remaining in these roles because it’s been engrained in us over the years? Are women still being held back, for what you stated, due to the “old boys club”? Or is there something less complicated to blame, such as women (more so than men) sacrifice their careers more often in order to care for their families. I believe it’s the later.

All-in-all, it’s fascinating to see how far the workforce has changed … and yet, how it’s remained the same. =/

I hate cubicles.
I have personally known 2 cubicles in my post-college life in the eng field.

Dilbert is dead on in 99% of his jokes. If your reading this and have never worked in a cubicle then read Dilbert comic strips at Barnes and Noble or in your sunday paper. This will show you exactly what to expect.

But I suppose a cubicle is better thanhaving to stare at your co-workers all day long.

On the flip side I get alot more luaghs out of The Office simply because it shows what its really like in an office.

People should be discourage to drink in US and go to so many ~happy hours~. This is also one of the reasons why so many families are destroyed nowadays. When employees go to happy hours they drink normaly a lot in US and the percentage of alcoholics, people addicted to alcohol in US is high, although people don`t search for help because they think they just drink a little as they don`t stay like drunk people somewhere with a big bottle sleeping in a park. A big campaign against this bad habit to drink more than two glasses many days a week at happy hours should be started!! The worst thing is that people drive after drinking at happy hours and this can cause many accidents. In Sao Paulo, SP -Brazil they have now a regulation > no drinking if you will drive, otherwise you will have to pay a high fare and possibly loose your driving license and also go to prison, depending how drunk you were or how dangerous you were driving. Please, stop drinking alcohol as if it is water!!We should appreciate a glass of wine, a glass of champagne…more than two glasses will be not good and not healthy for anyone!! Enjoy life with balance!!

I think commuting can be of great benefit to a person. No matter how long a commute you have it gives you the chance to get yourself going before arriving at your work place and then lets you un-wind before getting home at the end of the day. Whether you have a 5 minute walk or 90 minute journey the gap can make all the differnece. All the examples above are great and I agree that a lot of people will probably prefer to just keep quiet and sleep or listen to music and read.

I sleep. Thats what I do. Thats what I like to do. On a commute of about 50 minutes on a good day, an hour plus on traffic-filled day (in chicago traffic is more common than good), I put my head against the window of the bus and zonk out.

Often I dream. About work, something I read, someone I’m thinking about, or just letting my mind wander. I do it in the morning to clear my head for work, and at night, to clear my head for home. Having a big gap of time between work and home has helped me keep those two combative zones seperate. I don’t let them intermingle, with neither shoes and clothes at the office or files and projects at home.

The divide is important, but the sleep is awfully good.

I was recently “fired” from a job because I asked “Did anyone watch American idol/Dancing with the stars last night”. Apparently they considered that “idol chit-chat annoyance” and “too much personal conversation”. It seems that having a conversation period was considered a “distraction”. However, every time I turned around one of my co-workers was always getting the “inside scoop” on another co-worker and giving the information to my boss in a “low tone”.

I wish I had seen the “warning signs”. They were there but nothing clicked together. My first sign was the fact that I was always hearing about someone quiting, asked to turn in their resignation, or was fired EVERY WEEK! This was a small company with less than 100 employees.

My second clue was hearing about an upper management person being asked to turn his resignation in because of a comment he said in front of a customer. The comment was NOT sexual in nature, did NOT contain swear words, and was NOT an offense comment. The owner of the our company didn’t like him speaking to the customer.

The third sign was when I was counselled on my “personal conversations” they mentioned that a joking comment I had said would have gotten me “fired” if the owner had heard it. They said “they understood it was a joke, but the owner wouldn’t have liked it”. I found that a bit strange. The comment had nothing to do with the company and was considered an industry “inside joke”.

The final nail in the coffin was already put in the day I got there. I was hired with 14 other people. Those 14 other people were required to go through 2 weeks of intense training. Instead of the company putting me through the same training, they pulled me out after 2 hours. I never got a chance to “Bond” with the group. That group was angry at me for getting out of the training. (I had the same training somewhere else prior to hire). I was later told that I would be receiving the same training but I would be taking it on my own and fitting it into my workload. Which didn’t make alot of sense since I would be working directly with the 14 new people.

The place was a communications nightmare. My department didn’t even care enough to learn the new 14 worker’s names. If I was caught talking to anyone, the convesation I had was reported. At one point, I even made sure that I limited my response to 2 comments at the most. I was caught between being “stuck-up” by one group and “Distracting” on the other.

This experience has made me miss the “Water-cooler” conversations. Those conversations may be considered “Extra” but without them, you don’t have communication in your company. Companies can’t survive without communications. So I say, keep watching your “American Idol’s” and “Survivors”. They may be the secret to making your company succeed.

Concerning Zupek’s article asserting that thousands of jobs are going unfilled because most Americans don’t have any talent, I believe the real problem is employers are unwilling to compensate people for their skills. They want to pay minimum wage salaries so they get minimum wage applicants. I know dozens of people with Ed. degrees and others with CDL’s but don’t work in the field because the wages are so low they can’t afford it.

Why I Love My Job

I work a job helping others; I love it because I help my clients in living life to the fullest. I help my people in realizing their positive gifts which raises their self esteem. My people are people with thought disorders who normally have difficulty living on there own. I make others feel special which makes me feel good. Everyday is different for me; I never do the same thing two days in a role. As a case manager I never know my schedule because we do so many great services I love not doing the same thing everyday. I take pride in all the successes of my people and I feel like I’m a big part in changing their lives from sitting at home to becoming active parts of society. And that’s why I love my job. The biggest thing about my job I have loved is when I am a part of a person’s life I have seen people go from being homeless to having a job and going to college and I know I am a part of this accomplishment. Employers are finally beginning to recognize that their employees need to be treated with a little bit of care and respect for best results. Lots of employers are open to the idea of paying for health care in the areas of pyschologist visits, etc. when they did not do so before. Some companies even provide their personal crisis line to employees to help them. Just remember when accepting a job offer that there are valuable perks sometimes that are not included in your regular paycheck that are well worth it.

This is some very useful information. Indeed, being prepared for an interview and anticipating the questions that may come up can make or break your interview. Trying to foresee any hard questions and have the answer planned out in advance can mean getting the job. Even if you feel weird, having a friend who you “interview” with as practice prior to the real thing is a great idea. Reviewing information or interview pointers on the internet or in a publication of some sort can help you get focused.

I know from personal experience that I just feel a bit more relaxed and able to perform better if I try to get together some information about the company and review it prior to the company, and think about the questions they will most likely ask.

Good article, but yet I have to comment that it really does take more than 3 hours to prepare for your interview. Perhaps if you’ve already built your foundation and know just what your advantages are and how to describe them succinctly – then perhaps 3 hours would be appropriate for targeting purposes around the employer’s specific needs and how you will meet those needs. But, prior to all of that there is some true foundational work that needs attention in order to master interview success and win the job. We believe in a process called ‘matchmining’, which is discovery around who you are, what you can deliver and what the employer needs. Once this process has been completed you are in a position to sell your strengths and let the employer know ‘what’s in it for them’ if they hire you. The Interview – Part 1 Are you prepared?

You are sitting in the reception area waiting to be called back for your interview for a job you really want. Many thoughts are running through your head, some of these may include; How do I look? Will they like me? What questions are they going to ask? How prepared am I for this interview?

The last question – How prepared am I for this interview? – is the most important part of the interview.

Take advantage of the internet to research the company before you go on your interview. Find out how they are doing financially and if there are any complaints filed against them with the Better Business Bureau. If you know someone who works there, find out how they treat current and former employees and what type of benefits the company offers.

After you gather all of the facts about the company you will be interviewing with, form a list of questions you may have for THEM. Don’t be afraid to ask these questions. It shows that you are prepared and have researched the company and you actually have an interest in what they do. Keep in mind the interview is not just you being interviewed, you need to take this time to interview the company. After all, it is your future.

Have someone practice asking you questions to prepare yourself for the interview. These questions can start off being very generic and then develop into questions with more substance that require more thought. This practice should help prepare you to answer some questions the perspective employer may ask.

Know the importance of being prepared. It will help you go a long way in the interview process. If you are prepared you will be more relaxed in the interview and the employer will see your professional confidence.

I found this post interesting, but most importantly, balanced as well. I say that because while these professionals own up to the downsides of their profession, they are also quick to say that their occupation enriches their lives and that they love to do. It is my opinion that a perfect dream job simply doesn’t exist, but that if you are lucky enough to work at something you love or have passion for, you are among the lucky few. There is no better example of this than the job of parenting. For me, my job as a parent (and it is a job) is the most fulfilling job I will ever have, one that enriches my life beyond words. Some might say it’s a dream job. Yet it too comes with bad days, frustrations, long hours, little vacation time… well, you get my point. Dream job is an oxymoron. But, if you are fortunate enough to have a job for which you have passion and love for, well than you have hit the jackpot.
