What not to do: Bad etiquette at the office

Whether you work in an office, a factory or a retail store, working with a group of people means that all of those people are interacting on a daily basis. And many of those workers are easily irritated by on-the-job behavior that is rude, thoughtless or just plain annoying.

But are YOU the source of bad behavior and inappropriate etiquette at your office? Here is a list of offenses you may not even be aware you are committing.

Coming to work

  • You may be in a big rush to get to work, but speeding in the company parking lot or garage is never a good idea. Neither is pulling your car too close to another car. Causing a dent or scratch on a freshly-waxed car will definitely get your co-workers angry.  
  • You may not mind being in a cramped elevator, but your co-workers might. Be sure not to violate the personal space of your fellow passengers. And make sure you have any umbrellas fully closed before getting on.

 At your desk 

  • You may not even notice that you are doing it, but try to be aware of any tendency you have to make repetitive noises. Chewing (and popping) gum, tapping your fingers and feet, and clicking your pen can all be incredibly irritating to fellow cube dwellers.  
  • Be sure to limit both the volume and length of any personal calls you make at your workstation. Co-workers understand that you need to maintain contact with family and friends. But lengthy conversations that are punctuated with loud laughter or angry chat may leave them feeling like you are slacking on the clock.  
  • If you do see someone eating at their desk, that means they are in all likelihood on break or at lunch. This is NOT the time to launch into a lengthy work-related discussion.  
  • Be careful about eating at your desk. It may be unavoidable from time to time, but you should be reluctant to eat any aromatic food that may make your co-workers uncomfortable. Worse yet, it may make them hungry!  
  • And speaking of strong aromas, be sure to go easy on any scented product that may irritate co-workers. Cologne, perfume, body spray and even some soaps and shower gels can all give off a lingering smell. You might trigger a headache or asthma attack in a scent-sensitive worker.

In the restroom 

  • The restroom is not a library; try not to monopolize available space by reading the paper cover to cover.  
  • Although your boss may appreciate your ability to multitask, your co-workers will be irritated if you use your cell phone or PDA while using the facilities. No one wants to hear your private cell phone call or listen to you click away at the keyboard of your Crackberry.  

 In the break room

  • If you use the last of an item in the break room, be sure to refill it or let the appropriate person know. Otherwise, you get about as warm of a reception from your office mates as you do when you leave one swig of milk in the carton at home.  
  • If you use a shared refrigerator, make sure you mark your food with your initials and date. And no matter how hungry you are, never, EVER eat food that a co-worker has brought in – - at least not without asking first!
